    Disability Income.  The following agencies, and organizations might be able to provide benefits. 
  • Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits will be paid to a disabled worker and his or her family if earnings are lost or reduced due to the worker's disability and the worker has credit for a certain amount of work under Social Security. 
  • The amount of work credit needed depends upon the worker's age. 
  • Persons are considered disabled if they have a physical or mental impairment which: 

  • 1.  Prevents them from working and;
    2. Is expected to last got at least 12 months or to result in death.

     Social Security Disability insurance Benefits and SSI. 
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are made monthly to disabled people who have limited income and assets. 
  • You do not need any Social Security work credits to get SSI payments. People who have never worked may be eligible for SSI payments. 
  • A disabled person and his or her family may qualify for both Social Security Disability insurance Benefits and SSI payments. The amount you can receive from SSI depends upon the income and assets that you have. However, Social Security does not count certain assets or income when making their calculations. (For instance, generally a home and the land it is on are not counted as an asset that would reduce SSI payments.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Don't wait to file your claim for disability payments -- benefits begin from the date of the application. url: http://www.ssa.gov
      Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS):
  • Provided you are eligible for assistance, the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) has various programs that can provide help to injured persons and their families. 
  • Among them, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation assists in the rehabilitation of eligible persons with the ultimate goal of employment. The Division of Developmental Disabilities helps provide or obtain. 
      Medicare/Medicaid:
  • An injured person might be eligible for Medicare/Medicaid. DSHS or Social Security should be able to answer your questions.
      Department of Labor and Industries:
  • If the head injury was received while working a Workman's Compensation claim should be made with the Department of Labor and industries. 
  • Your doctor, or the employer, should be able to assist you in making such a claim. 
  • You may contact the Department of Labor and Industries for information and assistance. Local offices are listed in the blue pages of your telephone directory.
  • As in the case of applying for benefits under DSHS or Social Security, if you are turned down, you should immediately consult an attorney regarding whether the matter should be appealed
      Veteran's Benefits:
  • Depending upon the injured person's background, other agencies, such as the Veteran's Administration might be able to provide benefits. 
      Health insurance, accident or disability insurance: 
  • There are a variety of ways in which an injured person may be covered by health, or disability accident insurance. Existence of insurance coverage depends on the facts in each case. A consultation with an attorney covering the details of your case will help you determine whether such coverage is available in your situation
       Other Benefits:
  • Insurance benefits such as those made available through credit cards, memberships in AAA, unions, fraternal or social organization, or emploument.
